Boise Dental Tips For Recognizing Gum Disease

Bubble Gum is Under the Shoe

Your Boise dentist will tell you that healthy teeth depend on healthy gums. Gum disease is a common condition that can range from simple inflammation to significant tissue and bone loss. However, with proper dental hygiene and professional Boise dental treatments, you can manage gum disease while improving your health and saving your teeth in the process. That’s why Summit Dental would like to provide you with the following indications of gum disease.

Recognizing Gingivitis

A mild form of gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that’s caused by bacteria. While bacteria in the mouth is normal, it can build up with mucus and food particles causing plaque to form. Without adequate Boise teeth cleanings, plaque can harden into tartar which can inflame the gums. With gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen, and tend to bleed easily.

Recognizing Periodontitis

When gingivitis goes untreated it can turn into periodontitis. This causes an inflammation of the gums that cause them to pull away from the teeth. The pockets between the gums and teeth can then become infected. Bacteria can also enter the bloodstream. Eventually, teeth can loosen and fall out. They may also need to be removed to prevent additional problems.

Other Gum Disease Symptoms

If you suspect you have gum disease or if you have the following symptoms, it’s important to visit your Boise dentist:

  • Red, swollen, tender gums
  • Bleeding caused by brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding Gums
  • Loose or sensitive teeth

Treating Gum Disease

Dental hygiene is a critical part of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. That’s why it’s important to brush and floss your teeth daily and visit your Boise dentist for regular cleanings and exams. Even if you do have gum disease, it can be reversed with proper care. At Summit Dental we can provide you with a deep cleaning treatment called scaling and root planning for those who suffer from gum disease. During this treatment, tartar is scraped from the tooth below and above the gum line. Bacteria and other rough spots are also removed. Medications may be prescribed or mouthwashes may be recommended to limit and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. In severe cases, surgery may be required and teeth may need to be removed.
