Boise Dental Tips: Replacing Old Restorations

X - Ray of Teeth

As the old saying goes, “Nothing lasts forever.” This includes old dental fillings that may need to be replaced. As we get older, our best smile restorations age with us. While most restorations will last 10-15 years, they do however wear down and break over time. That’s why it’s important to schedule regular dental checkups so that your Boise dentist can check the health and integrity of your existing restorations.

Reasons to Replace Old Dental Restorations

Whether your fillings are metal or composite there are a few reasons that may warrant  a replacement. Normal wear and tear can occur, causing the seal between your tooth and the filling to break down, leak or separate. This is usually caused by the constant force of biting and chewing. Even tiny crevices can damage the filling leaving a tooth vulnerable to decay and infection. Old restorations should be replaced when they begin to show signs and symptoms of breakdown.

During routine exams, your Boise dentist will check your existing restorations for quality and strength. If a problem is diagnosed, it is a good idea to have it fixed sooner rather than later. Broken restorations allow cavity causing bacteria to enter the tooth underneath the filling. While it may not seem like a priority until you feel pain, you may end up needing more extensive dental work if you wait.

Symptoms of Damaged Restorations

  • Pain associated with biting or chewing
  • Pain associated with hot and cold
  • Persistent Toothache
  • Infection, swelling or abscess in the gums

If you have old fillings or restorations, make sure to get them checked with routine exams every six months by your Boise dentist. Replacing damaged restorations is important when it comes to preventing tooth decay and infection. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, contact Summit Dental Group at (208) 314-2275.
