Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. If you’re afraid to smile because of your teeth, you may need to visit your Boise dentist for some restorative or cosmetic dentistry. However, maintaining healthy teeth and gums isn’t that difficult. That’s why Summit Dental Group would like to provide you with the following tips for maintaining a beautiful smile.

Brush Your Teeth Properly

Unfortunately, not everyone brushes their teeth properly. When brushing, it’s important to hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle near your gum line. This helps to brush both your teeth and gums. Be sure to brush both the front and back sides of your teeth, as well as the chewing surfaces. Next, gently brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to prevent bad breath. For optimal oral health, it’s essential to brush at least twice a day, preferably after meals.

Floss Daily

Brushing is a wonderful way to clean the surface of your teeth. However, brushing can’t remove debris and bacteria between teeth. That’s why it’s important to floss daily to remove food residue that can cause tooth decay. Using at least 18 inches of floss, gently work it between your teeth, bring it up around each tooth where it meets the gum line.

Use Mouthwash

A fluoridated or antiseptic mouthwash can reach places that brushing and flossing can’t. While you can use mouthwash throughout the day, rinsing your mouth before bed will provide your teeth with an additional layer of protection during the night.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums includes eating healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and cheese. For optimal oral health, it’s important to avoid foods that are high in sugar. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages should also be consumed in moderation. When you do drink them, rinse your mouth with clean water afterward to remove any harmful residues.

Visit Your Boise Dentist

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends getting regular dental cleanings and checkups every six months. This will not only provide you with optimal cleaning, but it will also detect small problems before they become big ones.
