How Dieting Can Affect Your Dental Health

Boise Dentists

Did you know that some of the foods and drinks you consume to lose weight can affect your teeth? That’s right, many of the things you consume while on a diet contain high levels of acid which can eat at your enamel, cause discoloration, and lead to gum recession. The same goes for many different cleanses, juices, and shakes that contain very high levels of acid. These acids can, in turn, lead to sensitive teeth, tooth decay, and gum damage.

That’s why the Boise dentists at Summit Dental Group would like to provide you with the following information concerning your teeth and dieting.

Soft Drinks

In addition to staying away from an abundance of acid-based foods and drinks, it’s very important to know how harmful diet sodas truly can be. People around the Treasure Valley often choose diet sodas in order to avoid the sugar and calories in regular soda. However, you may not realize that these sodas contain high acid levels that can cause major damage to your teeth. In fact, when patients consume diet soda, their teeth are constantly being exposed to high levels of acid. Because of this, drinking too much soda of any kind can lead to oral health problems in the near future.

Other Foods & Drinks

Popular energy and sports drinks contain high levels of acids. However, it’s important to note that energy drinks like Monster and Redbull are especially harsh on teeth compared to sports drinks like Gatorade. Many salad dressings that contain vinegar can also be highly acidic, which can cause people to have bad tooth retention.

Preventing Tooth Damage

So, how are you supposed to avoid damaging your teeth while dieting? At Summit Dental Group, our Boise dentists try to educate our patients of the products they eat and drink and how often they are consuming them.  Furthermore, in order to get the best advice on how to care for your teeth, it’s important to talk with your dentist about the type of diet you may be on. Healthy teeth are just as important as a healthy body. If you have any questions regarding the effect your diet may be having on your oral health, make it a point to ask early on.
