What You Should Know About Your Child’s Dental Care

Little Boy is Playing Like Superhero

Dental care is critical when it comes to your child’s overall health by promoting strong, healthy teeth while preventing infections and decay. A healthy mouth will also help your child to talk and eat well, which significantly boosts their self-confidence and ability to thrive. That’s why your Boise dentist at Summit Dental would like to provide you with the following facts to ensure your child is receiving the best dental care they need.

Brush Early

Brushing an infant’s teeth is a little different than brushing an older child’s teeth. However, it’s never too early to start. Even if your baby hasn’t developed a tooth yet, it’s important to gently swab or wipe their gums with a soft, wet cloth to keep them clean and prevent bacteria buildup. Once a tooth has appeared, you should start brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day. As your child grows, you can use a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste and guide them to spit it out and rinse their mouth with water.

Brush Appropriately

Teaching your child to brush their teeth sets them up for a lifetime of good dental health. Most kids can brush their teeth on their own between the ages of 3 and 5. The brushing process should take approximately two minutes, focusing on each area of the mouth, bottom left, bottom right, top left, top right. Furthermore, teach your child to brush their teeth in tiny circles to prevent harsh scrubbing.

Flossing

Flossing should be a high priority, like brushing. Help your child to establish a regular flossing routine as soon as they have multiple teeth. Sometimes disposable flossers can be more helpful and easier to use than standard floss. To teach your child to floss, encourage them to press it down gently, yet firmly on both sides of each tooth.

Visit Your Boise Dentist

Similar to caring for their teeth at home, visiting a Boise dentist regularly is essential for a child from early on. Parents are encouraged to schedule a child’s first visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. After that, twice a year, visits are recommended. Frequent, early exams provide your child with the best chance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Routine dental care can also reduce dental problems and associated costs by 40%.
