Back-to-School: Boise Dental Brushing Routine!

School is officially back in session! Are you struggling with the morning rush? Between waking the kids up, getting them ready, and making them a healthy breakfast before sending them off on the school bus, there’s not a minute to waste in the morning. Below are some helpful tips from your Boise dentist to help make sure that brushing their teeth is a part of you kids morning routine:

Brushing before (or) after breakfast. Lots of parents encourage their children to brush their teeth first thing in the morning because it’s a good way to make sure it gets done. A good way of doing this is by telling your kids its time to “wake up their teeth”. However, you may choose to have your children brush their teeth after breakfast as a way to eliminate food particles left in their mouths after eating. Whether you decide they should brush their teeth before or after breakfast, make sure to stick to the routine because it will eventually become a normal, regular Boise dental habit that they won’t even think twice about doing…

Floss. While it’s always a good idea to floss in the morning to get rid of germs & bacteria that develop overnight when your children are sleeping, it can take up time they don’t have in the morning. If this is the case your Boise dentist suggest making sure flossing becomes an important part of their bedtime routine when your family isn’t feeling so rushed.

Brush before homework. As parents, we all know how teenagers can wait until the last minute to complete a dreaded homework assignment. To keep up on their healthy Boise dental routine, your Boise dentist suggests having them brush their teeth before starting their homework assignment.

Stay true to bedtime. The National Sleep Foundation suggests that toddlers ages 1-3 years need at least 12-14 hours of sleep each night; preschoolers ages 3-5 years need 11-13 hours of sleep each night; and school-aged children 5-12 years of age need at least 10-11 hours of sleep each night. These hours spent sleeping help to ensure healthy mental and physical development. Your Boise dentist suggest making sure your little ones make it to bed on time. This is also a great way to keep on track with their bedtime routines (like brushing their teeth). When their nighttime schedule is off or running late, important aspects of their bedtime routine can be forgotten or disregarded completely.
