Boise Dentist Facts About Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums can be caused by a variety of things. That’s why Summit Dental Group would like to provide you with the following common reasons your gums may be bleeding.

Brushing & Sensitive Gums

Some people throughout the Treasure Valley brush their teeth too vigorously to get them as clean as possible. However, gums can be very sensitive, and brushing too hard can irritate them and cause them to bleed. Brushing in a gentle circular motion is best to avoid damage and gum recession.

Wrong Toothbrush

In addition to brushing too hard, many people choose a hard toothbrush thinking it will clean their teeth better. However, you are more likely to cause damage to the enamel of your teeth and irritate your gums. That’s why it’s important to replace a hard toothbrush with a soft one and follow the recommendations for brushing above.

Incorrect Flossing

Incorrectly flossing your teeth can cause your gums to bleed or even recede. That’s why it’s important to floss gently, working your way up and down by following the curve of every tooth.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a major contributor to bleeding gums and tooth loss in the U.S. Gum disease is caused by a build-up of sticky, bacteria-filled plaque on the teeth. This plaque then irritates the gums, causing them to become swollen, sore, and bleed.  As a progressive condition that requires professional intervention by your Boise dentist, it’s best not to ignore any symptoms as gum disease can greatly impact your life.

Early symptoms include bad breath and bleeding gums. If left untreated, gum disease can develop into a condition called periodontitis that can lead to a variety of serious problems that can affect your dental and overall health. These include abscesses, jaw bone damage, tooth loss, cardiovascular disease, and more.

When to Visit Your Boise Dentist

If you notice blood in the sink when you brush your teeth on more than one occasion during the month, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your Boise dentist at Summit Dental Group. This is especially true if you suffer from bad breath or experience a foul taste in your mouth.
