Understanding Your Dental Crown Procedure

Dental crowns are a common procedure that many people undergo each year. If you are scheduled to have a dental crown, it is important to understand the process and what to expect.

That’s why the Boise dentists at Summit Dental Group would like to discuss the dental crown procedure in detail. We will talk about what happens during the appointment, how long it takes, and what you can expect afterward. We will also answer some frequently asked questions about dental crowns.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a type of restoration that covers the entire surface of a tooth. Crowns are used to restore teeth that are broken, cracked, or have large cavities. They can also be used to improve the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth.

When Is a Dental Crown Needed?

There are several reasons why your dentist may recommend a dental crown. In most cases, our Boise dentists recommend dental crowns when:

  • A tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a filling
  • A tooth has had a root canal
  • A tooth is being held in place by a bridge
  • A tooth is severely discolored or misshapen

How Is a Dental Crown Procedure Performed?

The dental crown procedure usually takes place over two appointments. During the first appointment, your tooth will be prepared for the crown. This involves removing any damaged tissue and shaping the tooth so that the crown can fit properly. A mold or impression of your tooth will also be taken so that the crown can be custom-made to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth.

You will then be given a temporary crown to wear while your permanent crown is being made. The second appointment is when you will return to have your permanent crown placed. Your dentist will remove the temporary crown and check to make sure that the fit and color of your permanent crown are satisfactory. Once they are satisfied, they will cement the crown into place.

What Can I Expect After the Procedure?

After your dental crown procedure, it is normal to experience some sensitivity. This usually goes away after a few days. You may also have some soreness in your gums. These symptoms can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication.

It is also important to avoid chewing on hard foods or biting your nails for at least 24 hours after the procedure. This will give your gums time to heal and will prevent you from damaging your new crown. You should also take care to brush and floss regularly and visit your dentist for regular checkups so that your crown lasts for as long as possible.

What Else Should You Know About the Recovery Process?

Here are a few more things to keep in mind during your recovery:

  • You may experience some discomfort for the first few days. This is normal and will go away as your mouth heals.
  • Don’t hesitate to take over-the-counter pain medication if you need it.
  • Be sure to follow all of your dentist’s instructions for caring for your teeth after the procedure.
  • Brush and floss regularly and visit your dentist for regular checkups.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist.

How to Prepare for a Dental Crown Procedure

Here are a few things you can do to prepare for your dental crown procedure:

  • Choose a dentist that you trust and feel comfortable with.
  • Ask your dentist if there is anything you need to do to prepare for the procedure.
  • Make sure to tell your dentist about any allergies or medical conditions that you have.
  • If you smoke, try to quit at least a week before the procedure. Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.

What Are the Risks of Dental Crowns?

As with any medical procedure, there are some risks associated with dental crowns. These include:

  • Allergic reactions to materials used in the crown
  • Infection at the site of the crown
  • Nerve damage
  • Problems with the fit of the crown
