Quick Boise Dental Facts About Enamel Erosion

Every day we use our teeth to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. However, they are also constantly under attack. Even though it’s largely preventable, enamel erosion is an extremely common Boise dental problem people experience throughout the Treasure Valley. Main causes of enamel erosion are acidic foods and beverages. Other factors that can weaken your enamel are medications, tooth grinding, acid reflux, certain health ailments, chewing ice or using your teeth as tools.

At Summit Dental Group, our Boise dentists take pride in educating our patients about how to keep their enamel strong while preventing erosion in the first place. That’s why we’d like to provide you with the following quick facts about this prevalent oral health problem.

  1. Unlike other tissues in the body, enamel doesn’t regenerate. That’s why it’s vital to take care of your teeth because once your natural enamel is gone, it’s gone for good.
  2. Due to the foods and drinks, we consume every day, it’s estimated that nearly half of all teenagers have some form of enamel erosion.
  3. Brushing your teeth too hard can impair the enamel of your teeth. You also don’t want to brush your teeth right after you’ve consumed high acid foods or beverages. The reason? Acid softens your enamel and brushing your teeth can wear it away even further. Instead, it’s important to thoroughly rinse your mouth with water and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to protect your enamel.
  1. Sugary beverages, sodas, energy and sports drinks are all harmful to your teeth. That’s why it’s important to reduce your intake and replace them with water or dairy-rich products that protect and strengthen your enamel.
  2. Another cause of enamel erosion is dry mouth which results in less saliva that keeps our teeth healthy and strong. If you suffer from dry mouth it’s important to drink plenty of water and talk with your Boise dentist about what you can do to treat it.
  3. Stomach acid due to vomiting or acid reflux can lead to enamel erosion. If you suffer from either of these problems, it’s important to talk with a doctor about preventing these conditions from interfering with your oral and overall health.

If you’ve already experienced enamel erosion, it’s vital to visit your Boise dentist to prevent the problem from getting worse.
