The Dangers Of Boise Dental Infections

“It’s just a little sore, it will go away.”

“I’m too busy right now, I don’t have time to go to the dentist.”

“It’s just a little sensitive, it’s no big deal.”

It happens to most Treasure Valley residents at least once in their life. Your teeth become sensitive or you suddenly develop a dull ache. Even worse, you could develop sore, bleeding gums or pain in your lower sinus area.

These are all examples of situations that are important not to ignore. If the pain is the result of a dental infection, there can be grave consequences of postponing a visit to your Boise dentist for treatment. Oral infections can destroy your teeth, gums, and jawbone or even lead to life-threatening situations. In fact, prior to modern dentistry, tooth decay-related infections often lead to death prior to the 19th century.

Keep in mind that a dental infection doesn’t always cause pain. Bad breath, fever, swelling gums, glands or jaw, along with a bad taste in the mouth can indicate the presence of an infection.

Caught and treated early, an infection may not cause any additional problems. If left untreated, however, an infection can make you seriously ill and lead to bigger, more expensive treatments down the road.

Often, an infection may be the result of an abscess which is a pocket of undrained pus. Pus is a by-product of the body’s immune system attempting to fight an infection and consists of dead white blood cells.

Even more, sores in the mouth can be caused by either an infection or a virus. White patches in the mouth can also indicate an oral yeast infection called thrush. While all of these conditions can be treated, it’s important to visit your Boise dentist as soon as possible.
